Visual guide to significant version differences

Since Playmobil began, some sets have been released in more than one version. Some sets were issued in 3, 4 or even 5 versions. There are nearly 500 pairs of versions, but for many of these, the difference between the versions is minor.

Shown below are 100 of the most significantly different version-pairs. Sets 3523 and 4646 are included even though it is not certain they have more than one version.

Note that the photos which follow only illustrate the parts which differ between two consecutive versions. The photos don’t show all parts from each version.

In the photographs I have used original parts, though I have very few of the original sets. In a few cases I have had to use Photoshop® either to duplicate parts or, as in the following three cases, to change the colour of a part (i.e. I have the right part but in the wrong colour).

I am still waiting for a few photos. Where possible, I have provided links to other sources in place of the missing pictures, including Klickywelt (Kw.de), and Produkt-Arkiv at playmobil.de (PM.de). I have listed the missing pictures in a table at the end. (If you can provide me with pictures of these, I would be very grateful!)

The sets are in set number order. The set names are from PlaymoDB. I have also given the version identifier for each of the main sources consulted (see links page for more details);

Comment: On the set boxes of both versions it is stated ‘Farben unverbindlich’ (colours may vary), so it is possible that cars were manufactured in green, yellow and red for both versions and each box contained a random assortment of two different colours of car. This would mean  the only difference between V1 and V2 is the box labelling (V1 klicky box, V2 symbol box).

According to collector The_Mad_Hadder on Playmofriends, “..1988 [version] had stickers that needed to be applied, the 1989 came with stickers pre-applied and the 1992 version came screen printed.” Many other early sets had stickers supplied separately and possibly later versions with pre-applied stickers or printing. Such set versions have not been documented here.
